Grinnell College Achieves Major Solar Milestone on Path to Net-Zero Emissions 

Grinnell College has completed a 9,000-panel solar array, the largest private installation in Iowa, now powering one-third of the campus. The project is a key step toward the college’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2040.

Grinnell College has long been committed to sustainability, integrating eco-friendly practices and renewable energy solutions into its campus operations. The college has made significant strides in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to recent additions like new solar installations and a wind turbine.

Supporting Grinnell’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions are various initiatives, including an ongoing conversion to geothermal heating and cooling that will eventually replace the natural gas-fueled boiler plant. Student organizations like the Grinnell College Student Environmental Committee also play an active role, participating in sustainability projects and promoting environmental education.

Grinnell’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond energy projects to include responsible resource management, waste reduction, and a campus-wide culture of environmental awareness. By prioritizing sustainability, the college not only reduces its environmental impact but also prepares the next generation of environmental stewards to lead and implement sustainable practices in their own communities.

Partnerships and Collaborations

Grinnell College entered into a 20-year contract with Sunlight General Capital LLC to purchase all energy from a 4-MW solar project, with an option for a 10-year extension. The solar array connects directly to the campus electricity distribution system and is projected to produce 6.3 million kWh annually—accounting for roughly one-third of the campus’s electricity needs.

The installation features advanced technology to maximize efficiency, including bifacial panels that capture sunlight from both sides, a single-axis tracker to optimize exposure, and a 500-kW battery to help manage peak electricity demand.

According to Chris Bair, Grinnell College’s environmental and safety manager, the new solar array has been operational for about a month and already supplies nearly four megawatts of power to most campus buildings. In addition to this major installation, the college uses six smaller solar stations to power off-grid buildings, such as the facilities building and the environmental education center.

Economic Benefits and Cost Savings

Beyond its sustainability impact, the solar array project at Grinnell College offers substantial economic benefits. By generating a significant portion of its own electricity, the college can reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources and lower utility bills. The long-term contract with Sunlight General Capital LLC also ensures stable, predictable energy costs, protecting the college from price fluctuations.

The 500-kW battery storage system helps manage peak energy demand, further reducing costs associated with high electricity usage. These savings can then be reinvested in other sustainability initiatives, amplifying the project’s economic and environmental benefits.

The Path to Net-Zero Emissions

In 2017, responding to student concerns about the environmental impact of fossil fuels, Grinnell College’s board of trustees established the Fossil Fuels and Climate Impact Task Force to explore ways to reduce the college’s carbon footprint. This initiative paved the way for adopting solar energy as a significant power source on campus.

In 2018, Grinnell College developed a comprehensive sustainability plan with the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Through collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and organizations like the Grinnell College Student Environmental Committee, the college identified solar power as a key strategy in this effort. This collaborative approach continues to drive Grinnell’s progress toward its net-zero emissions target.

Students from the Grinnell College Student Environmental Committee and other campus organizations have been actively involved in the project and broader sustainability initiatives.
