Honduras has officially commissioned the Patuca Solar Farm, a landmark 50 MW state-owned photovoltaic facility poised to significantly advance the nation’s renewable energy goals. Located in Terrero Blanco in the Olancho department, the plant was developed by the national electric utility, Empresa Nacional de EnergĂa ElĂ©ctrica (ENEE), marking a major public investment in clean power generation.
The successful completion of this significant project, which represents an investment of approximately $100 million, was realized through a collaboration involving key industry players. Representaciones Mecánico Eléctricas, S.A. (REMESA) served as the EPC contractor, while the project also benefited from a partnership with the prominent local company Grupo Jaremar. The financing was secured through non-recourse debt from the Central Bank of Honduras.
At the core of the facility’s power generation capability are 55,000 advanced M12 Ultra modules supplied by leading manufacturer ZNShine Solar. These high-efficiency 12BB PERC Monofacial Double-Glass modules were selected for their durability and performance, designed to withstand challenging environmental conditions and ensure the long-term reliability of the plant.
The Patuca Solar Farm is projected to generate 84,000 MWh of clean energy annually. This substantial output will play a crucial role in displacing fossil fuels and is expected to reduce the country’s carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 55,000 metric tons each year. The project, completed in early 2024, not only strengthens the national grid but also sets a powerful precedent for future renewable initiatives.
As Honduras continues to build out its renewable energy infrastructure, the Patuca Solar Farm stands as a testament to the effectiveness of strategic public-private partnerships in driving both environmental stewardship and economic development. Its commissioning represents a critical step forward in the nation’s journey toward a sustainable and energy-independent future.
