Addressing Energy Needs: Huawei Introduces Solar Solutions to Kano

In a significant move to address Nigeria’s mounting energy challenges, global digital power leader Huawei officially launched its FusionSolar smart solar product line in Kano on May 9, 2024. The unveiling targets a wide range of consumers, from residential homeowners to commercial and industrial enterprises, offering a timely alternative amidst severe economic pressures caused by escalating energy costs.

The urgency for such solutions was starkly highlighted by Ni Zhilin, Director of Huawei Digital Power Nigeria. He pointed to Nigeria’s position as a leading importer of generators and the unsustainable economic burden of recent energy price hikes. The cost of diesel, for instance, has skyrocketed from N280 per litre in 2022 to N1300 in 2024, a reality underscored by recent reports. “Renewable energy is the most sustainable and intelligent option for the country,” Zhilin stated, emphasizing its growing dominance as a primary global energy source.

Manufacturing Sector Welcomes Huawei’s Solar Partnership in Kano

The country’s manufacturing sector has been particularly hard-hit by the energy instability. Mohammed Bello Umar, Chairman of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) for the Bompai/Jigawa Branch, detailed the crippling effects of volatile energy costs. He cited increased production expenses, operational disruptions, and diminished market competitiveness as critical consequences that stifle investment and growth.

In response, MAN has forged a strategic collaboration with Huawei. Oweh Mba-Sam, Acting Managing Director of Manufacturers Power Development Co. Ltd, explained the decision, noting Huawei’s global leadership as the largest exporter of PV inverters and battery storage systems. This partnership is expected to deliver efficient, cost-saving energy solutions. Mba-Sam praised Huawei’s reliability and comprehensive support structure, which includes skilled project partners for seamless installation and ongoing maintenance, providing crucial confidence to industrial consumers.

Huawei Introduces Solar Solutions to Kano for Advanced Technology at Every Scale

Huawei’s portfolio is designed for broad applicability. Jeremiah Ejiroghene Aminode, a Solution Manager at Huawei, revealed that the company’s smart solar products are already in use in over 2.7 million households worldwide. The systems range from 5KWh units for homes to large-scale 2MWh solutions for industrial applications, all backed by 5 to 10-year warranties.

A key innovation showcased was the Power-S, a modular power backup solution introduced by Nick Lusson. This system features seamless switching between energy sources and uniquely allows for the integration of new and old batteries without performance degradation. Its modular design and pre-integrated cables also significantly simplify and speed up the installation process.

Huawei’s track record includes powering some of the world’s most ambitious solar projects. In Nigeria, its technology is central to the Abuja Steel PV plant developed by Paras Energy, the nation’s largest solar farm. Globally, Huawei was instrumental in the world’s largest microgrid BESS project in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia, a landmark 400MW PV and 1300MWh facility operating entirely on renewable energy. By bringing these proven technologies to Kano, Huawei aims to foster sustainable development and enhance Nigeria’s industrial resilience.
