Sweden solar wind hybrid: Unique 2024 park opens

In a landmark move for Sweden’s renewable energy sector, 2024 marks the inauguration of the nation’s first large-scale hybrid power park, integrating wind and solar generation at a single site. Pioneered by developer European Energy, the facility in SkÃ¥ramÃ¥la, located in the Tingsryd municipality of Kronoberg County, represents a significant step towards a more stable and efficient green energy grid.

The innovative project combines a new 39.3 MW solar park, which spans 49 hectares, with an existing 49.6 MW wind farm comprised of eight turbines. This co-location strategy optimizes land use and leverages shared grid infrastructure. Together, the hybrid facility is projected to generate 127 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to meet the power needs of approximately 32,600 Swedish households.

The core advantage of such hybrid systems lies in their ability to provide a more consistent power supply. Solar panels generate peak power during daylight hours, while wind turbines are often more productive at other times, including at night. This complementary generation profile helps balance production and enhance grid efficiency. Recognizing this potential, European Energy has already announced plans for two additional hybrid parks in the country.

The Skåramåla park is part of a broader trend in Sweden. In the summer of 2024, energy company Vattenfall also brought its Hjuleberg hybrid wind-solar farm online, contributing further grid support services. Another notable project is a hybrid park in Halmstad, which pairs 6.6 MWp of solar capacity with a 4 MW/4.4 MWh battery storage system, showcasing the next step in grid stabilization technology. This site, which uses 11,928 bifacial panels, also incorporates biodiversity measures such as creating ponds and insect hotels.

These pioneering projects underscore a strategic shift in Sweden’s approach to renewable energy development. By combining generation sources and, in some cases, energy storage, these hybrid parks address key challenges like land use and grid intermittency, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
