Iberdrola Expands Renewable Portfolio with Italian Acquisition
ROME, Italy – Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has strengthened its foothold in the Italian renewables market by acquiring a 40-megawatt (MW) operational onshore wind farm. The asset was purchased from Italian firm Belenergia and France’s RGREEN INVEST, marking another significant step in Iberdrola’s strategic growth within the country.
The wind facility, which was commissioned in 2018, operates under a long-term incentive scheme that ensures stable and predictable revenue streams. This financial security makes the asset a valuable addition to Iberdrola’s expanding portfolio of generating assets across Europe.
This latest acquisition lifts Iberdrola’s total installed renewable capacity in Italy to approximately 450 MW. The new wind farm is strategically located near the company’s Lucania Complex, where it is also developing the 20 MW Montelungo solar PV project. The move complements Iberdrola’s other key Italian assets, such as the Etruria Complex and the major 243 MW Fenix solar project, showcasing a clear strategy of building regional energy hubs. The company has already found success in the market, securing notable power purchase agreements for its other projects, as seen with Iberdrola Italian Solar: Impressive 90 MW PPA Deals Proven.
The expansion in Italy is part of Iberdrola’s wider European strategy to consolidate its position as a leading renewable energy producer. The company is actively developing projects across the continent, including the recent commissioning of the 195 MW Tamega Norte wind farm in Portugal. This consistent investment underscores the company’s commitment to the energy transition in a market that continues to see significant growth, with projects like the Sicily solar plant: VSB’s stunning 36MW Project Approved highlighting Italy’s vast renewable potential.
