India Solar Capacity 2026 Expansion
India added over 21 GW of solar capacity in the first five months of 2026, reflecting accelerated deployment within the renewable energy sector. As of March 31, 2026, India’s cumulative solar capacity reached 150.26 GW, an increase from just 2.82 GW in March 2014.
The first quarter of 2026 saw a record installation of 15.3 GW of solar capacity, making it the highest ever in a single quarter, according to government reports. The total solar capacity now includes 110.43 GW from utility-scale projects, 25.73 GW from rooftop solar installations, and 14.10 GW from off-grid initiatives.
For FY 2025–26, India registered the highest annual addition of solar capacity with 44.61 GW added. Of this, 16.31 GW represented distributed solar systems, with 8.71 GW from rooftop solar and 7.67 GW from KUSUM projects.
