Iran’s Solar Capacity Goals for 2027
Iran is targeting 12,000 MW of solar-power capacity by May 2027, effectively doubling its current solar capacity. As of late September 2026, Iran had more than 5,400 MW of operating solar capacity and over 6,000 MW of total renewable capacity.
Major Solar Complex Development and Iran Solar Capacity 2027
The Iranian government is developing a 5,000 MW solar complex in Isfahan Province, which is backed by an estimated $2.8 billion in private investment. The project, initiated in August near Kuhpayeh, is expected to cover approximately 6,000 hectares.
Financing and Support for Iran Solar Capacity 2027
Reports indicate that over $1 billion in financing has been provided through Iran’s National Development Fund to support the expansion of solar capacity. However, officials have identified several challenges that could impact the achievement of the 12,000 MW target, including delayed payments, financing access, household-solar incentives, energy storage solutions, and grid connections.
Long-term Solar Aspirations and Iran Solar Capacity 2027
In addition to the immediate target, Iran is also pursuing a longer-term goal of 30,000 MW of solar capacity. The feasibility of reaching the 12,000 MW goal remains dependent on the successful execution of project construction, financing, and effective integration into the regional grid.
Context within Renewable Energy Sector and Iran Solar Capacity 2027
The announcement comes at a time when Iran’s renewable energy development is accelerating in response to domestic energy needs and international economic conditions. Energy officials remain optimistic but cautious, stressing that collaboration across various sectors is essential to meeting these ambitious solar energy goals.
