Iran to Build 15GW Solar Capacity with $8.3bn Investment

Iran has unveiled a strategic initiative to develop 15 gigawatts of new solar energy capacity, a landmark project valued at approximately $8.3 billion. This ambitious plan, which centers on building new solar photovoltaic (PV) power stations, signals a decisive move to diversify the nation’s energy portfolio and address persistent power imbalances.

A Three-Phase National Strategy

According to First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber, the proposal to generate 15GW of solar electricity is designed to unfold in three distinct phases. The project, which currently awaits final approval from the country’s economic council, will be financed primarily through private sector investment. A key objective is to reduce reliance on liquid fuels in thermal power plants, thereby enhancing national energy security and decentralizing the power grid.

Bolstering Domestic Manufacturing

To support this massive undertaking, Iran is simultaneously scaling up its domestic solar panel production. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed that a new 1.8GW production line is set to come online, which will boost the nation’s total annual manufacturing capacity to 2.3GW. This expansion is crucial for supplying the vast number of solar modules required. Vice-President Mokhber has touted the high quality and efficiency of Iranian-made solar panels, which will be installed across 23,000 hectares of land already allocated for the new solar farms.

Economic and Environmental Transformation

The 15GW solar initiative is poised to deliver significant economic and environmental benefits. By shifting away from fossil fuels, the project is expected to substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions and advance a green transformation of the economy. Furthermore, the development is projected to create a wave of new jobs in manufacturing, installation, and operations, stimulating local economies. The increased demand for each solar panel and related components is also anticipated to spur technological innovation and attract foreign investment into Iran’s burgeoning renewables market.

A Foundation for a Sustainable Future

As Iran pushes to triple its solar capacity, this plan represents a cornerstone of its long-term energy strategy. By leveraging its abundant solar resources, the nation aims to stabilize its power grid and provide clean, reliable electricity to millions. While the project’s success is contingent on formal approval and navigating existing infrastructural hurdles, its implementation could establish Iran as a regional leader in renewable energy and serve as a model for sustainable development. The expansion of solar panels on this scale marks a profound commitment to a more secure and sustainable energy future.
