Jamaica solar project to launch 220 MW renewable energy tender

Jamaica Solar Project Overview

Jamaica has announced plans for a 220 MW renewable energy tender paired with 110 MW of battery storage, as part of its strategy to achieve a 50% renewable electricity mix by 2030. This initiative is described as the largest renewable energy plus battery storage tender in the English-speaking Caribbean.

Jamaica Solar Project Procurement Structure

The procurement is managed by the Generation Procurement Entity (GPE) and represents the second tranche of Jamaica’s renewable auction program. The tender is technology-neutral, allowing developers to bid for solar, wind, or a combination of technologies, as long as they include the requisite storage solutions.

Jamaica Solar Project Key Specifications

  • Renewable generation: 220 MW net capacity.
  • Battery storage: 110 MW / 220 MWh with a 2-hour discharge duration.
  • Battery chemistry: Lithium iron phosphate (LFP).
  • Contract terms: Successful bidders will enter into 20-year power purchase agreements and will be responsible for building, owning, and operating the projects.
  • Auction timeline: A Request for Information (RFI) is scheduled to launch on March 19, with a formal auction expected in the third quarter of 2026.

Jamaica Solar Project Strategic Goals

The introduction of battery storage is aimed at enhancing grid stability and decreasing reliance on oil-fired peaking plants. The initiative builds upon a prior auction in which 100 MW was oversubscribed five-fold, indicating strong interest from developers.

Jamaica Solar Project Future Plans

As Jamaica moves forward with its renewable energy agenda, the procurement’s successful rollout could serve as a model for future expansions in the Caribbean region.
