A Project of Unprecedented Scale

This is no ordinary solar farm. The ultimate vision for the Kubuqi project is a massive energy corridor stretching approximately 400 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. The goal is to achieve a staggering installed capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, a figure substantial enough to power the metropolis of Beijing and its surrounding regions. Construction on this long-term initiative has been underway since at least 2022, with several key phases already coming online.

2024 Milestones and Current Progress

While the 2030 goal is on the horizon, the project has already made remarkable headway. As of 2024, the total installed capacity has surpassed 5 GW, with the first two 1 GW phases already connected to the power grid. A visually striking component of this initial stage is the “Junma” or horse-shaped solar array, which is comprised of 196,000 individual panels spread across roughly 4,200 hectares of desert landscape. This tangible progress marks a significant step in turning the ambitious blueprint into a functioning reality.

More Than Megawatts: Combating Desertification

The Kubuqi Desert Solar Wall delivers a powerful dual benefit. Beyond generating enormous amounts of clean electricity, the vast arrays of solar panels play a crucial role in environmental reclamation. By covering the ground, the panels reduce wind speed at the surface, which helps to stabilize the sand dunes and prevent erosion. This effort directly combats desertification in China’s seventh-largest desert, turning a barren landscape into a productive asset for both energy generation and ecological recovery.

The Solar Great Wall is a centerpiece of China’s broader strategy to lead the global transition to renewable energy. This megaproject underscores the country’s commitment to peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
