Mongolia Renewable Energy and ACWA Power Sign Agreement
Mongolia’s SunSteppe Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Petro Matad, and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore renewable energy projects and cross-border electricity exports from Mongolia to China. The agreement aims to establish 4.5 GW of renewable-generation capacity in its initial phase, which includes approximately 500 MWh of battery-energy storage.
The collaboration will involve a comprehensive assessment of solar and wind facilities in Mongolia, alongside the development of industrial-scale battery systems. Additionally, it will look into transmission infrastructure to connect Mongolia with China or other designated markets. Currently, Mongolia does not export electricity to China, making this initiative contingent upon building significant new generation capacity and cross-border transmission capabilities.
The memorandum is described as an exploratory framework and does not confirm that construction or financing has commenced.
Potential Market for Mongolia Renewable Energy Cross-Border Electricity
The agreement sets a framework for substantial growth in Mongolia’s renewable energy sector, positioning the country to potentially tap into China’s vast electricity market. Although Mongolia has abundant renewable energy resources, it has largely remained untapped in terms of cross-border electricity trade.
Next Steps for Mongolia Renewable Energy Collaboration
Both companies are expected to further evaluate project feasibility, including conducting necessary studies to ascertain site viability. The initiative underscores ACWA Power’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint across Central Asia, while also allowing Mongolia to leverage its natural resources more effectively.
