Malawi Installs Utility-Scale Malawi Battery Storage System
Malawi has completed installation of its first utility-scale battery storage system, a 20-megawatt facility designed to stabilize electricity supply and store solar power. This installation is noted as southern Africa’s only utility-scale battery storage system outside of South Africa and Namibia.
Officials from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) activated the battery over the weekend. The facility is intended to enhance the resilience of Malawi’s power network against climate shocks.
The project received funding from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet. ESCOM stated that the battery system could help connect an additional 600,000 households and reduce power outages from an average of four hours to less than two hours.
Future plans indicate that Malawi will pursue the construction of three more battery storage facilities, aiming for a combined capacity of 60 MW in different cities.
