Zambia’s Solar Power Capacity Expansion Progress
Zambia is nearing the commissioning of 1,000 MW of solar power capacity by December 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy reforms aimed at achieving energy security and ending load shedding.
Government Initiatives for Zambia Solar Power Capacity
The Zambian government, through the Ministry of Energy and utility ZESCO, has been actively advancing this 1,000 MW solar plant project as part of its broader strategy to diversify the energy mix and reduce dependence on hydroelectric sources. In December 2025, ZESCO made progress toward realizing this ambition, boosting President Hichilema’s vision for energy security through solar energy.
Timeline for Zambia Solar Power Capacity Completion
This initiative is expected to be completed by December 2026, aligning with the government’s timeline for delivering 1,000 MW of electricity as part of its energy reform agenda. The project will also support future regional connectivity, including the planned Zambia–Tanzania power interconnector, which is set to be implemented next year.
