Solar Projects Sierra Leone: 40 MW Capacity Launched in 2026

New Solar Projects Sierra Leone: Completed Initiatives

On June 10, 2026, President Julius Maada Bio inaugurated two solar power facilities in Sierra Leone. The initiative included a 30 megawatt solar plant equipped with a 15 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in Newton and a 10 megawatt plant with a 6 megawatt-hour battery in Lungi, contributing a total of 40 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the national grid.

The projects were developed under the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention (RESPITE) with support from the World Bank. This initiative marks a significant enhancement to Sierra Leone’s energy infrastructure, which has long faced challenges related to energy poverty.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Bio emphasized that these solar projects are pivotal to strengthening the national grid and improving reliability, thereby expanding access to electricity for various sectors including healthcare, education, and industry.
