The groundbreaking ceremony on February 10, 2026, marked the official start of a project that underscores Malaysia’s commitment to clean energy. With an estimated cost of approximately RM1 billion, the Bestari solar farm is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

The project is being developed by Bestari Solar Sdn Bhd, a consortium led by Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd in partnership with Worldwide Holdings Berhad and Rotaka Engineering Services (M) Sdn Bhd. Spanning an impressive 430 hectares of state-owned land, the facility will primarily utilize floating solar technology. More than 80% of the solar panels will be installed on raw water storage ponds, an innovative approach to land use that maximizes energy generation without occupying valuable terrestrial space.

Scheduled for commissioning in July 2027, the solar farm will operate under a 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply stable, clean energy to the national grid. The project employs advanced floating solar technology designed not only for efficiency but also for environmental stewardship. Special measures, including oxygenation and algae growth control systems, are being integrated to protect the water quality of the ponds.

This development is a key component of the Malaysian government’s fifth Large-Scale Solar (LSS5) programme, which aims to allocate up to 2,000 MW of renewable energy capacity. It directly supports the national goal of achieving 40% renewable energy in its total power capacity by 2035. As of July 2025, Malaysia’s renewable capacity stood at 4.57 GW, or 17% of the total, with solar power being the leading contributor.
