Greek industrial group Metlen Energy & Metals has strengthened its presence in Latin America with the inauguration of the Doña Antonia solar farm in Chile. The facility, confirmed as operational in 2024, adds 89 MW of clean energy capacity to the nation’s grid from its location in the Coquimbo region.
A Strategic $65 Million Investment after Metlen Energy Opens 89-MW Solar Farm in Chile
Representing a significant investment of USD 65 million, the Doña Antonia project is a key component of Metlen’s ambitious growth strategy in the country. Situated on a 200-hectare private plot approximately 14 kilometers north of Ovalle, the plant utilizes 151,920 advanced solar modules. Its output is sufficient to supply electricity to an estimated 77,000 homes, making a substantial contribution to the regional energy supply.
“This is our second park in Chile. We are making a huge contribution to the energy transition in the region and the country,” stated Juan Pablo Toledo, Metlen’s country manager. He highlighted the area’s favorable conditions, noting, “The radiation conditions are exceptional in this area, with a robust transmission system and the willingness of the communities and authorities, which has allowed us to promote the local economy and foreign investment.”
Construction on the farm began in 2023, creating an average of over 400 jobs. Looking ahead, Metlen plans to enhance the facility’s capabilities by integrating an energy storage battery system by the end of 2025, which will allow for the storage and dispatch of solar power after daylight hours to improve grid stability.
Part of a 588-MW Renewable Energy Portfolio after Metlen Energy Opens 89-MW Solar Farm in Chile
Doña Antonia is the second of four major solar projects in Metlen’s 588-MWp Chilean portfolio, which collectively represent a total investment of $460 million. The other projects include the 109.2-MW Willka facility, which came online in late 2023, and the forthcoming Tocopilla (227 MW) and Tamarico (167 MW) parks, both expected to be operational in 2024. All four projects are backed by a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Enel Generacion Chile.
The addition of Doña Antonia marks a milestone for the Coquimbo Region, bringing its total number of active photovoltaic installations to 61, with a combined capacity of 602 MW. As the largest solar park in the Limarà province, the project solidifies Metlen’s role as a key player in Chile’s transition to renewable energy.
