New Solar Initiative Launched in Western Mongolia with ADB Support
Mongolia has officially advanced its renewable energy ambitions, launching a tender on June 2, 2025, for an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor to develop a new 19.8 MW solar facility. The project, named the Myangad solar photovoltaic plant, is set to be constructed in the Myangad Soum of Khovd aimag, a province in the country’s western region.
This development is a key component of Mongolia’s broader “upscaling renewable energy initiative,” which is financially backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The new plant will be situated adjacent to the existing 10 MW Khovd Nar solar plant, effectively creating a more substantial renewable energy hub in the area. Upon its completion, the facility will be owned and operated by the Western Energy System.
Project Timeline and Bidding Details
The timeline for the project is ambitious, with an expected completion date in the third quarter of 2026. The tender process is open exclusively to contractors from ADB-eligible source countries, reflecting the international partnership driving the initiative. Prospective bidders were required to submit applications by July 16, 2025, with tender documents available from Mongolia’s Ministry of Energy for a non-refundable fee of $600.
Contributing to National Energy Goals
The 19.8 MW Myangad plant represents a significant step in diversifying Mongolia’s energy portfolio and reducing its historical reliance on coal. This project will make a substantial contribution to the nation’s growing solar capacity, which stood at 143 MW at the close of 2024. By leveraging its abundant solar resources, Mongolia is actively working to build a more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure for the future.
