Mozambique renewable energy: 98% of Electricity from Renewables by 2025

Mozambique is on track to become one of the top ten countries globally for renewable energy, with projections indicating that 98% of its electricity will come from renewable sources by 2025.

Mozambique renewable energy potential and opportunities

Hydropower currently makes up 95% of Mozambique’s renewable energy mix, though the country also has a small installed capacity of wind and solar power.

Building on this foundation, Mozambique plans to leverage its abundant natural resources to significantly increase its renewable energy capacity, aiming for 23.4 gigawatts by 2030. The nation’s potential for solar energy is immense, as highlighted in recent discussions on solar projects in Mozambique.

Mozambique renewable energy targets for 2030

By 2030, Mozambique intends to boost its renewable energy capacity to 23.4 gigawatts, consisting of 5.6 gigawatts from hydropower, 4.4 from solar, 3.6 from wind, and 0.1 from biomass. These targets are backed by the country’s vast renewable potential, which includes an estimated 23 gigawatts of hydropower, 23 gigawatts of solar, 5.6 gigawatts of wind, and 2 gigawatts of biomass.

These ambitious targets are part of a broader national strategy to diversify the energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and promote sustainable development. The government is fostering a favorable investment environment with policies that encourage clean energy projects. Simultaneously, Mozambique is focused on improving energy access, with plans to increase electrification rates to 50% by 2030. As part of this effort, the BRILHO Programme is delivering clean, affordable energy to 3.1 million people, transforming homes, businesses, and sustainability.

The future of Mozambique renewable energy development

Mozambique’s renewable energy future looks promising. The government’s ambitious targets and a favorable investment climate are attracting international interest, capitalizing on the country’s abundant natural resources and strategic location.

As its renewable sector continues to grow, it is poised to become a major contributor to the nation’s economy and energy security. With a strong commitment to expanding its capacity, Mozambique is well-positioned to play a key role in the global energy transition, a point emphasized in discussions at the Solar Power Africa 2025 conference.
