Nigeria Adopts Solar-powered Cold Storage to Combat Losses

Nigeria is tackling staggering post-harvest food losses, which can affect up to 40% of perishable produce, through the growing implementation of decentralized, solar-powered cold storage solutions. While not yet a formal national policy, this charge is being led by private enterprises, with a notable new facility in Enugu State recently drawing praise from the U.S. Consulate for its role in enhancing the agricultural value chain.

Private Sector Leads as Nigeria Adopts Solar-powered Cold Storage to Combat Losses

A new refrigerated aggregation center in Aguobu Iwollo, Enugu State, represents a significant step forward in this effort. The facility, developed by Manamuz Electric, was lauded by United States Consul General in Lagos, Will Stevens, during a virtual inauguration on April 26, 2024. As media outlets reported, Stevens highlighted how such infrastructure is essential for sustainable economic development and connecting workers to better employment opportunities.

The project is spearheaded by Uzo Mbamalu, a Mandela Washington Fellow, who leveraged connections made during a U.S. government exchange program at the University of Nevada, Reno. The initiative secured a grant from the U.S. Africa Development Foundation and received advisory support from the university’s College of Business, showcasing a powerful model of international collaboration.

Economic Models and Growing Interest as Nigeria Adopts Solar-powered Cold Storage to Combat Losses

The adoption of solar cold storage is gaining traction, with increasing interest from farmers and marketers, particularly in Northeast Nigeria. This trend is supported by policy interest from entities like the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). Although high upfront costs can be a barrier, the falling price of solar technology and the proven viability of pilot projects are paving the way for wider use.

Innovative business models are emerging to make this technology more accessible, including community-owned cooperative systems and lease-to-own options for entrepreneurs. Pioneering companies have demonstrated strong financial returns, with some cases showing an impressive 36% Internal Rate of Return (IRR), underscoring the economic sustainability of these ventures.

A Collaborative Push for Food Security as Nigeria Adopts Solar-powered Cold Storage to Combat Losses

Consul General Stevens emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “Infrastructure is essential to promoting equitable and sustainable economic growth and development in Nigeria and other emerging economies.” He framed the commissioning of the solar-powered facility as a key example of effective partnership between the U.S. government, Nigerian authorities, and private enterprise to bolster food security.

By providing reliable, off-grid cooling for fruits, vegetables, fish, and dairy, these systems directly address the critical infrastructure gaps that lead to Nigeria’s multi-billion dollar annual losses in the agricultural sector, ultimately improving livelihoods for farmers and increasing the availability of fresh produce for communities.
