NIKE Japan renewable energy: Stunning 100% Goal by 2025

NIKE Japan to Achieve 100% Renewable Electricity with Mitsui Solar Deal

In a significant move towards corporate sustainability, NIKE Japan has announced a major partnership with global trading and investment company Mitsui & Co. to power all its owned and operated facilities in Japan with 100% renewable electricity. This long-term agreement marks a crucial step in NIKE’s global commitment to decarbonization and responsible operations.

The Landmark NIKE Japan renewable energy Agreement

The core of this initiative is a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) between the two companies. Under the terms of the deal, Mitsui & Co., along with its subsidiary Mitsui & Co. Project Solutions, will supply NIKE Japan with renewable energy sourced from 16 domestic solar power plants.

This arrangement will provide 18 megawatts of solar capacity. The energy will be delivered in the form of Non-FIT Non-Fossil Certificates (NFCs), ensuring that the electricity consumed by NIKE Japan is verifiably sourced from renewable generation. The solar power plants are located within the TEPCO Power Grid service area, with 15 MW coming from recently commissioned facilities and an additional 3 MW from newly developed projects.

Powering a Sustainable Future for NIKE Japan with renewable energy

This VPPA will cover the complete electricity consumption for all of NIKE Japan’s owned and operated facilities, which include its distribution centers, corporate offices, and retail stores across the country. By matching 100% of its electricity use with clean energy, NIKE Japan is aligning its domestic operations with the brand’s ambitious global climate targets.

Tetsuji Kobayashi, Vice President and General Manager of Nike Japan, highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating that it “reflects NIKE’s commitment to advancing responsive, resilient, responsible, and efficient operations.”

For its part, Mitsui emphasized its dedication to facilitating the energy transition. The company will leverage its extensive expertise in electricity sales, supply-demand balancing, and renewable energy development to support NIKE’s goals and contribute to the broader adoption of renewable energy throughout Japan. This collaboration showcases how corporate partnerships can drive meaningful progress in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
