Over 4200 Private Solar Systems Installed in San Marino

San Marino has installed over 4,200 private solar systems in the past 15 years, making it a global leader in solar energy production. These solar systems generate 5% of the country's energy, boosting sustainability and energy independence.

A New Era for Clean Energy

San Marino — a small but progressive republic — has achieved an impressive milestone in its renewable energy journey. Over the past 15 years, the country has installed more than 4,200 private solar systems

This remarkable achievement places San Marino among the global leaders in solar power production, with 450 watts of energy produced per capita. In comparison, Luxembourg — one of the world’s most prominent solar adopters — produces 550 watts per capita.

San Marino’s success in the renewable energy sector is largely attributed to its robust adoption of photovoltaic systems. These solar systems are key to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy.

Private solar systems in San Marino cover about 5% of the country's total energy consumption, with 50 larger systems adding to the grid's overall capacity. These installations have a combined power output of 22 megawatts, further enhancing the nation’s energy independence.

The Growth of Private Solar Systems in San Marino

The first photovoltaic system in San Marino was installed in Fiorentino 15 years ago. Since then, the republic has made significant strides in expanding its renewable energy capacity.

Today, it stands in sixth place globally in terms of solar energy production per capita. This growth is largely due to the private solar systems that allow citizens to generate their energy and feed any excess back into the grid.

According to Luciano Zanotti, president of the Renewable Energy Companies, the people of San Marino are fully prepared to adopt electric technologies for their homes and vehicles. Zanotti emphasized that the country has fostered an environment where renewable energy is accessible to all, especially young families.

San Marino now offers couples under 39 the opportunity to purchase solar systems through a financing option with monthly payments of 200 euros over five years. This program also includes a discount of approximately 1,000 euros, further encouraging private citizens to install solar systems.

Incentives Drive the Expansion of Solar Systems

San Marino’s success with private solar systems has been fueled by government policies designed to promote renewable energy. The government provides tax breaks and incentives for both individuals and businesses, enabling more people to install solar panels.

One key factor that has driven the adoption of these solar systems is San Marino’s innovative law allowing the exchange of energy on-site. This means that private solar system owners can send excess energy back into the grid and retrieve it whenever needed.

This system eliminates the need for expensive batteries, reducing the upfront costs of installing solar systems and increasing the return on investment. Zanotti stressed the importance of continuing these policies, urging the new government to increase tax incentives for the private solar sector.

San Marino’s energy policy allows individuals to install solar systems remotely by renting rooftops or surfaces outside their property. This enables residents in historic areas or condominiums to participate in renewable energy production.

The Future of Solar Energy in San Marino

Private solar systems are at the heart of San Marino’s renewable energy future. Currently, the country generates 700 watts per capita through photovoltaic systems, exceeding Italy’s average of 502 watts.

At a public conference hosted by the Renewable Energy Companies, experts praised San Marino's renewable energy laws and alignment with European standards. They commended the integration of private solar systems and encouraged expanding incentives to further promote the sector.

With the ongoing support of the government and industry leaders, private solar systems will continue to play a critical role in powering San Marino. The country’s success in this area shows that even small nations can make a big impact in the global fight against climate change.
