Peru Solar Energy Import and Chile Project Overview
Peru is considering a US$550 million electricity interconnection project with Chile to import surplus solar and wind power. The proposal, however, has not yet received final investment approval or a construction timetable.
Peru Solar Energy Import Transmission Details
The planned project includes a 500-kilovolt transmission line linking Montalvo in southern Peru with Kimal in northern Chile. This line aims to facilitate the exchange of energy between the two countries, allowing Peru to access Chile’s renewable energy surplus while enabling electricity to flow in both directions as supply and demand change.
Capacity and Economic Impact of Peru Solar Energy Import
The interconnection is designed for a capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts, and it is projected to facilitate annual electricity exchanges between 3,600 and 5,700 gigawatt-hours. A 2025 study by the Inter-American Development Bank estimates the average combined economic benefits to be about US$170 million per year.
Regulatory and Technical Agreements Needed for Peru Solar Energy Import
Despite the potential benefits, the project still depends on various technical, regulatory, and commercial agreements between Peru and Chile. As it stands, the initiative to import solar energy remains a plan rather than an operational arrangement.
