Portugal solar project: Stunning 36.8 MW Launch in Lousada

Sonnedix has announced the start of commercial operations for its 36.8 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Lousada, Portugal. This commissioning marks a significant step in the company’s expansion in the Iberian Peninsula and its commitment to developing sustainable energy solutions.

Details of the Portugal solar project

The solar project, located in the municipality of Paredes in the Porto district, represents a key addition to Portugal’s renewable energy landscape. The plant is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of over 18,300 households annually. This impressive output will also contribute significantly to environmental goals by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 19,600 tonnes each year.

A noteworthy aspect of the development was the company’s focus on local integration. The project involved engagement with local authorities and was supported by a €1 million investment in a site integration plan.

The energy produced by the PV plant will be sold under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), ensuring a stable and predictable revenue stream while supplying the grid with clean energy.

Sonnedix’s Growth in Portugal solar project

This new facility pushes Sonnedix’s operational solar capacity in Portugal to over 300 MW, joining other recent projects such as Douro, Bustelo, and Lordelo. The company’s growth is not confined to Portugal; it reflects a broader strategy across the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. This mirrors the company’s other major achievements, such as its impressive 800 MW expansion in Italy.

Looking ahead, Sonnedix has indicated that its portfolio in Portugal is evolving. The company is moving toward developing hybrid projects that combine solar, wind, and battery storage. It anticipates bringing its first battery energy storage systems (BESS) into operation in 2026, signaling a strategic shift towards more integrated and resilient energy solutions.

Funding and Financial Impact of the Portugal solar project

The Lousada solar project was financed through a EUR 160 million (USD 173 million) debt facility provided by Deutsche Bank. This funding, secured in March, also covers two other solar projects in Portugal, totaling 130 MW.

This financing is part of Sonnedix’s strategy to secure long-term funding for its renewable energy projects, ensuring the company can continue to invest in new developments and expand its capacity.

Sonnedix’s Commitment to Renewable Energy in the Portugal solar project

Sonnedix is a global renewable energy producer that specializes in the development, construction, and operation of solar PV plants. The company, owned by institutional investors advised by global investment manager J.P. Morgan Asset Management, has established itself as a leader in the field. Understanding the basics of solar panel manufacturing provides insight into the complex supply chains and technologies Sonnedix manages to bring such large-scale projects to fruition.

With a substantial operational capacity and a strong pipeline of projects, Sonnedix is one of the leading independent renewable energy producers in the Iberian Peninsula. The company’s focus on long-term power purchase agreements and strategic partnerships ensures a stable and sustainable growth trajectory.

The launch of the 36.8 MW solar project in Lousada is a significant milestone for both Sonnedix and Portugal’s renewable energy sector. It demonstrates a firm commitment to expanding capacity in the region and contributes powerfully to the global transition to clean energy.
