QatarEnergy, TotalEnergies Partner on 1.25 GW Solar Project

QatarEnergy is partnering with TotalEnergies to develop a 1.25 GW solar power project in Iraq as part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP).

Solar Project to Feature 2 Million Bifacial Panels

Set to be one of the largest of its kind in the world, this ambitious project will feature 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels on single-axis trackers. Once completed, it will supply up to 1.25 gigawatts (peak) of solar power to the electricity grid in Iraq’s Basra region.

Under the terms of the agreement, which is contingent on regulatory approvals, QatarEnergy will acquire a 50% stake in the solar project, with TotalEnergies holding the remaining 50%.

Phased Development to Power 350,000 Homes in Basra by 2027

The solar project will be rolled out in phases from 2025 to 2027, ultimately supplying electricity to approximately 350,000 homes in the Basra region.

“I am pleased to have concluded our entry into this very important project for Iraq’s energy sector, and look forward to working with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to progress it to fruition. We thank the Iraqi government for their trust, and TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power development,” said Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy.

QatarEnergy Secures 25% Stake in Iraq Gas Project

In June 2023, QatarEnergy announced it had joined a consortium to execute the Gas Growth Integrated Project in Iraq, securing a 25% stake alongside TotalEnergies (45%) and Iraq’s Basra Oil Company (30%).

The solar project aligns with the broader objectives of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a major initiative to make better use of Iraq’s natural resources. This includes constructing facilities to capture substantial amounts of flared gas in the Basra region for power generation.
