Renewable Energy Plan: Mexico to Add 32,475 MW by 2030

Government Announces Renewable Energy Plan for Capacity Expansion

Mexico’s government announced a plan to add 32,475 MW of new electricity generation capacity by 2030, with approximately 22,376 MW—or about 70%—expected to come from renewable sources. The initiative was unveiled by Energy Minister Luz Elena González during a press conference.

Investment and Capacity Breakdown of the Renewable Energy Plan

The renewable energy portion is forecasted to be predominantly sourced from solar and wind power, with solar contributing around 55% of the new capacity and wind accounting for about 30%. The total investment required for these projects is estimated at 739 billion pesos, which will fund projects by the state utility CFE, joint ventures, and private investments.

Renewable Energy Goals within the Renewable Energy Plan

The government aims for at least 38% of the nation’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. CFE is projected to be responsible for about 79% of the new installed capacity through various mechanisms.

Context and Implications of the Renewable Energy Plan

This expansion plan is part of Mexico’s broader strategy to strengthen its electricity generation capacity and to transition towards cleaner energy sources.
