Romania solar PV: Impressive 2.5 GW Install in 2025

Romania’s solar PV capacity is experiencing a remarkable surge, with installations expected to add a massive 2.5 GW in 2025 alone. This dynamic growth cements the country’s position as a key player in Europe’s renewable energy transition, with its total installed PV capacity projected to reach an impressive 11 GW by the end of the year.

Steady Growth in Romania solar PV

According to the latest report from SolarPower Europe, Romania has not only maintained its growth trajectory but has accelerated it, entering the top 10 fastest-growing solar markets in the European Union for 2025. This builds on a period of rapid expansion, where the country’s installed capacity jumped from 1.6 GW at the end of 2022 to 5.5 GW by the end of 2023, making it the fifth-largest European solar market that year.

This expansion is fueled by significant investments in large-scale solar farms. Major projects are breaking ground across the country, such as Nofar Energy launching work on what is set to be Romania’s largest solar park and ENEVO beginning construction on an 87.5 MWp plant in Giurgiu. This trend is further exemplified by major energy players making strategic moves; a prime example is when OMV Petrom acquires a 710MW PV portfolio, signaling deep confidence in the market. The sheer scale of these projects highlights the complexity of the solar panel manufacturing process required to supply hundreds of thousands of modules.

Government support, including a successful Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme backed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), has been crucial in attracting these investments. This progress places Romania at the heart of the regional energy conversation, a topic often discussed at events like the Solar Central Eastern Europe: Unique 2025 Warsaw Summit.

Residential Solar Installations of Romania solar PV

The solar boom isn’t limited to utility-scale projects. The residential sector is also a powerful driver of growth. In 2023, Romanian homeowners installed 1.2 GW of solar systems, a significant jump from 740 MW in 2022. This performance made Romania the fourth-largest residential solar market in Europe, with a total installed residential capacity of 2.1 GW by the end of 2023.

Across the EU, 16 GW of residential solar was installed in 2023. While this was a slight dip from the previous year, forecasts predict a strong rebound. SolarPower Europe expects residential installations to hit 20 GW in 2024 and 22 GW in 2025, pushing the EU’s total residential capacity to 92 GW. For homeowners, understanding the basics of manufacturing can provide a deeper appreciation for the technology powering their homes.

Energy Storage Expansion for Romania solar PV

To support the grid and maximize the benefits of solar power, energy storage is also seeing significant growth. In 2023, Romania became the ninth-largest residential battery market in Europe, adding 79 MWh of new storage capacity. This brought the country’s total residential battery capacity to 103 MWh. Projections show this trend continuing, with an estimated 129 MWh to be installed in 2024 and 155 MWh in 2025, culminating in a total of 387 MWh by the end of 2025.

This mirrors a broader EU trend, where a total of 11 GWh of residential storage was installed by the end of 2023. Forecasts suggest the EU will add another 5.5 GWh in 2024 and 5.9 GWh in 2025, reaching a total capacity of 22.5 GWh.

Romania’s expanding solar and energy storage capacities reflect a decisive shift towards renewable energy. With robust growth in both large-scale and residential installations, the country is solidifying its role as a leader in the EU’s green energy landscape.
