Sierra Leone solar power facilities launched with $63.5 million funding

Sierra Leone Solar Power Energy Advancements

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned two solar power facilities in the country. The first is a 30-megawatt solar plant, which includes a 15-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, located in Newton. The second facility is a solar mini-grid designed to cater to hundreds of residents and businesses in the surrounding area.

Sierra Leone Solar Power Project Funding and Specifications

These facilities are part of the Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project, which is supported by the World Bank, providing substantial financing that includes US$63.5 million in International Development Association (IDA) funds for this subcomponent. The solar plant at Newton features 39 MW peak solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity along with 22 MWh battery storage. A related facility located in Lungi has a capacity of 13 MW peak solar PV and 6 MWh battery storage.

Sierra Leone Solar Power Timeline and Future Developments

Commissioning for these projects is anticipated to begin in April 2026, as outlined in the recent announcements from government officials. In addition to the primary facilities, President Bio has secured a $2.2 billion energy deal during a United Nations session, signaling a strong commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives within the country.
