Silicon Ranch, one of the largest independent power producers in the U.S. specializing in solar energy, agrivoltaics, battery storage, and carbon solutions, has announced that its 58 MW Scotford Solar Farm near Edmonton, Alberta, is now in commercial operation in Canada.
Solar Power Boosts Shell Refinery’s Efficiency
The 58-megawatt (MWAC) facility, the largest behind-the-meter solar project in Canada, will provide Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park with enough renewable energy to meet approximately 20% of the refinery’s needs over the next 25 years, covering 100% of its electricity demand at peak capacity.

As Canada’s largest behind-the-meter solar project, the Scotford Solar Farm will supply 20% of the energy for Shell’s refinery.
Silicon Ranch has earned recognition for delivering the first utility-scale solar projects across several southeastern U.S. markets, including Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, and South Carolina. This landmark Canada solar farm marks two more milestones for the company: it is Silicon Ranch’s first international project and the first large-scale solar installation in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.
Silicon Ranch Owns and Operates All Solar Projects
As with all its projects, Silicon Ranch will own, operate, and maintain the solar facility while also managing the land throughout the project’s lifecycle. This defining aspect of its business model highlights the company’s long-term commitment to its partners and the communities it serves.
“At Silicon Ranch, one of our guiding principles is that we are only successful when our partners are successful, and the Scotford Solar Farm represents a successful outcome for our partners at Shell Canada and our partners in Strathcona County. This project not only supports Shell’s economic and operational goals, but also catalyses our significant capital investment in the community. As the long-term owner of this facility and the land it occupies, Silicon Ranch will contribute critical tax revenues to help fund government-identified priorities for decades to come,” said Reagan Farr, Silicon Ranch Co-Founder and CEO.
The groundbreaking behind-the-meter solution at the Scotford Solar Farm is the first of its kind in Canada and serves as a replicable model for other energy and chemical companies looking to develop similar solutions to support their operations.
