BRATISLAVA – The Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA) and the Energy Communities Cluster of Slovakia (KEKS) have signed a cooperation memorandum to support the development of community energy projects, according to industry reports.
The agreement is intended to boost energy self-reliance for cities, municipalities, and households, and to make the sharing of locally generated energy easier.
Solar at the center
Solar power is expected to be the main technology for these new energy communities, according to Ján Karaba, director of the Slovak Association of Sustainable Energy (SAPI).
Karaba said that early community projects will likely utilize rooftop solar installations, local solar arrays, and battery storage. The systems will be designed for both on-site electricity use and local electricity exchange. SAPI is also advocating for legal and regulatory reforms to make community energy projects more economically viable.

Market context
The initiative follows a period of growth in Slovakia’s distributed solar market. Nearly 16,000 new photovoltaic systems were connected over the past year, with a focus on residential and small commercial users.
Slovakia’s total installed solar capacity reached over 1.3 GW by late 2025. The growth reflects activity across different scales, from small rooftop systems to industrial installations such as the Cemmac solar power: Impressive $4M Investment in Slovakia project.
