Solar panel recycling Georgia: Unique 2024 Greentech Deal

SOLARCYCLE Leads the Way in Solar panel recycling Georgia: Unique 2024 Greentech Deal

Georgia is cementing its status as a leader in the U.S. solar industry with a groundbreaking 2024 greentech deal. SOLARCYCLE has committed to a massive investment in Polk County, launching a first-of-its-kind facility that combines advanced solar panel recycling with domestic glass manufacturing. The project, endorsed by Governor Brian Kemp, began with a $344 million commitment and was later accelerated with an additional $62 million, underscoring its strategic importance for creating a circular economy for renewable energy in the United States.

The state-of-the-art operation, recognized as the “Mid-size Community Deal of the Year,” is poised to create over 600 jobs, with projections exceeding 1,250 as the facility becomes fully operational. The 255,000-square-foot recycling plant, set to begin operations in mid-2025, will deploy next-generation technology capable of recovering up to 99% of the value from decommissioned photovoltaic (PV) panels. This high recovery rate reclaims essential solar panel raw materials like silver, copper, silicon, and aluminum, diverting nearly 100% of panel waste from landfills.

By the end of 2026, the facility is projected to process up to 10 million panels annually, equivalent to nearly 5 GW of solar energy. An adjacent glass manufacturing plant, scheduled to start production in 2026, will use the recycled materials to produce new solar glass. This creates a closed-loop system that feeds directly back into the solar panel manufacturing process. Major players in Georgia solar panel manufacturing have already signed on, with SOLARCYCLE securing offtake agreements with companies like Illuminate USA, Canadian Solar, Silfab, and Qcells to supply glass for their operations, including the impressive Qcells Georgia solar factory.

This initiative directly addresses the critical end-of-life challenge for solar infrastructure. As the deployment of clean energy accelerates through programs like Georgia community solar, developing a responsible waste management solution is paramount. SOLARCYCLE’s project not only manages waste but also enhances the resilience of the domestic supply chain, reducing reliance on imported materials. This effort complements other significant investments in the state’s solar ecosystem, such as the DOE loan for a Qcells solar plant, positioning the region at the vanguard of sustainable energy.

By pioneering an integrated approach to component recovery and remanufacturing, Georgia’s new facility sets a new global benchmark. While other nations are exploring new methods for solar panel recycling, this deal represents one of the most significant commercial-scale commitments to a true circular solar economy.
