New Solar Power Stations in Guyana
Guyana has launched three solar power stations in Region 9, providing approximately 129 kilowatts of generation capacity to about 1,600 residents in the communities of Katunarib, Potarinau, and Shulinab.
The station in Katunarib generates 41.5 kW of solar energy, supported by 187 kWh of battery storage. The Potarinau station also provides 41.5 kW of capacity with equivalent storage, supplying power to 123 households, which serves around 685 people, as well as local administrative and medical facilities. Shulinab hosts the largest facility among the three, with a generation capacity of 46 kW and 208 kWh of battery storage.
Investment in the solar installations includes approximately GYD 33 million for each of the Katunarib and Potarinau facilities, while the Shulinab station is estimated to have cost around GYD 44 million. These projects align with Guyana’s broader renewable energy program targeting remote communities.
The launch of these solar power stations is part of the government’s low-carbon development strategy, with plans to implement solar systems in eight additional villages within Region 9 by 2025-2026. The national agenda aims to reach a total of 56 villages as part of the renewable energy initiative.
