The Port Maria installation is the 145th to go live nationwide and holds the distinction of being the first solar-powered Wi-Fi hotspot in the parish.
According to the Jamaica Information Service, the USF is actively pursuing solar energy to power its community Wi-Fi services to improve operational efficiency and reliability, especially in areas where traditional power grids may be less stable. This approach leverages renewable energy to ensure consistent connectivity. The Port Maria hotspot is the sixth Wi-Fi facility to be launched in St. Mary, joining existing installations in Annotto Bay, Highgate, Gayle, Oracabessa, and Islington.
