Spain solar project: Impressive 330MW build begins

Lightsource bp, a leading solar energy company, has officially begun construction on a major 330-megawatt (MW) solar project in Spain. This development marks a significant step forward in the country’s renewable energy expansion. Located in the Castilla la Mancha region, the project consists of three co-located solar farms: the 160 MW El Garbancillo, 90 MW Los Barrancos, and 80 MW El Escudero. This initiative underscores Spain’s growing role as a European hub for large-scale renewable energy, contributing substantially to the nation’s clean energy goals and supporting a more sustainable power grid.

Lightsource bp Receives 330 MW Spain solar project

The Castilla la Mancha project is the second 330 MW solar initiative in Spain acquired by Lightsource bp in 2024, demonstrating the company’s rapid momentum in the region. In April, the company secured a portfolio of seven projects with a combined capacity of 330 MW, all located in the Extremadura region. This continued investment highlights the favorable conditions for solar development in the country, which is seeing impressive growth in its renewable energy sector.

The new solar initiative is expected to generate approximately 660 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This output is enough to power 210,000 homes and offset 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Achieving this scale relies on an efficient solar panel manufacturing process that produces advanced photovoltaic technology capable of maximizing energy generation.

“We are delighted to announce the acquisition and start of construction on this new solar project in Castilla la Mancha, which will bring further investment and jobs to the region,” said Miguel Lobo, director of business development for Lightsource bp in Spain. “We’re looking forward to continuing to grow our business in Spain, and to our solar projects contributing to Spain’s net zero ambition, as well as global climate goals.”

Lightsource bp’s Spanish Projects to Power 1 Million Homes with Spain solar project

With this latest addition, Lightsource bp’s portfolio in Spain now includes 20 large-scale solar projects, with a combined capacity of 2.5 gigawatts (GW). This impressive portfolio is sufficient to power nearly one million homes and reduce CO2 emissions by 700,000 tonnes annually—an environmental impact equivalent to removing 400,000 cars from the road. This aligns with the significant planned investments detailed in the Spain Solar Panel Manufacturing Report, cementing the company’s long-term commitment.

The country is becoming a hotbed for green technology, with other major developments like the 160MW battery storage project by Naturgy also underway.

Beyond generating clean energy, the company is committed to supporting local communities. Lightsource bp has already invested over €1.5 million in community schemes and provided educational resources to over 4,000 students through various initiatives, ensuring its projects deliver lasting local benefits.
