Greece’s Thessaloniki Airport Opens On-Site Solar Power Plant
In a significant move towards sustainable aviation, Greece’s Thessaloniki “Makedonia” Airport has officially inaugurated its first on-site photovoltaic park. Operated by Fraport Greece, this development marks the first solar power plant to be established at any of the regional airports in the country, setting a new benchmark for green energy in Greek transportation infrastructure.
Achieving Sustainable Operations with Thessaloniki Airport Solar Power
The new solar plant is a cornerstone of Fraport Greece’s commitment to enhancing energy autonomy and significantly reducing the environmental footprint of its airports. The project represents a major step forward in achieving the company’s sustainability objectives.
The photovoltaic park boasts an impressive capacity of approximately 3 MWp. Spanning an area of 35,000 square meters, the installation features 4,877 advanced solar panels and 8 inverters. This setup is projected to generate an estimated 4.5 GWh of electricity annually. This output is not only sufficient to meet the airport’s operational energy needs but is also equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 1,100 households.
Environmental and Financial Commitment to Thessaloniki Airport Solar Power
The environmental impact of the solar plant is substantial. It is expected to reduce the airport’s annual CO2 emissions by approximately 3,000 tons, which accounts for a 30% reduction in the airport’s total carbon footprint.
Fraport Greece fully funded the €3.4 million investment, underscoring its dedication to greener operations. The construction, which began in March 2025 and concluded in December 2025, utilized equipment that fully complies with stringent European standards.
Sergio Ocampo, Chief Technical Officer for Fraport Greece, highlighted the project’s importance, stating that it is a key milestone in the company’s strategy for more environmentally friendly airport management. This initiative at Thessaloniki Airport paves the way for future renewable energy projects across Greece’s regional airports, solidifying a commitment to a more sustainable future for the aviation industry.
