In a strategic move to secure its supply chain for the American market, California-based Thornova Solar has officially commenced full-scale production at its new manufacturing facility on Batam Island, Indonesia. The plant, which began commissioning in September, boasts an annual nameplate capacity of 2.5 GW for both solar cells and solar panel modules, positioning the company to navigate evolving U.S. trade regulations.
The new Indonesian factory represents a significant technological leap, featuring state-of-the-art, fully automated PV production lines. To maximize efficiency, the facility integrates a sophisticated 5G-AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) transport system, using mobile robots and a fifth-generation mobile network to ensure high-speed, low-latency material handling and intralogistics.
“We have equipped the Indonesia plant with our state-of-the-art production technology, and we are excited to announce it is now in full-scale production of solar modules,” stated William Sheng, CEO of Thornova Solar. “While commissioning began in September, we are now ready to meet customer demand for advanced solar technology.”
The facility is engineered to produce a versatile range of solar PV modules, utilizing both PERC and N-type cell technologies. The product lineup spans from 400-watt all-black modules designed for the residential market to high-output 720-watt models for large-scale utility projects.
Sheng emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to its primary market. “The U.S. is the most important market for Thornova Solar. It is therefore mandatory that we ensure our production capacity meets local regulations and the increasing demand,” he said. He outlined a multi-pronged strategy that includes adding manufacturing capacity in the U.S. by mid-2025. “By mid-2025, U.S. customers will have the choice of sourcing N-type PV cells or modules from Indonesia, Laos, or the USA… By early 2026, we will be able to provide 100% U.S.-made modules, fully meeting domestic content requirements.”
Thornova Solar, part of the Yuncheng Solar Technology Group, recently merged with its sister company Sunova Solar while retaining the Thornova brand. This expansion in Indonesia adds to its existing 1.5 GW module factory in Vietnam, which exclusively serves the U.S. The company projects its total operational capacity will reach 10 GW for PV production and 9 GW for solar cells by the close of 2024. In a separate expansion effort, Thornova also announced a partnership with Upsolar in October to supply customized solar solutions to several European markets.
