TotalEnergies Google renewable: Impressive 15-Year Power Deal

In a significant move to advance corporate decarbonization, TotalEnergies has solidified a landmark 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google. The deal secures 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of certified renewable electricity annually for the tech giant, positioning TotalEnergies as a key supplier in Google’s ambitious quest for 24/7 carbon-free operations by 2030.

The clean energy will be sourced from TotalEnergies’ nearly completed Montpelier solar farm in Ohio. This facility is strategically connected to the PJM grid system, the largest electricity grid in the United States, ensuring a reliable power supply for Google’s data centers in the region. This agreement is a prime example of the large-scale corporate power deals that are becoming instrumental in financing new renewable capacity.

This PPA is a cornerstone of Google’s comprehensive strategy to eliminate its carbon footprint. Rob Jett, Global Energy Lead for Google, emphasized the partnership’s importance, stating, “We’re thrilled to partner with TotalEnergies to help us reach our goal of operating our data centres and offices on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.” This initiative is one of many Google renewable energy projects worldwide, complementing efforts like its solar investment in Taiwan, all aimed at decarbonizing its global digital infrastructure.

For TotalEnergies, this agreement highlights its growing influence in the U.S. renewable energy market and its capacity to meet the demands of major technology companies. The project is part of the company’s extensive 10 GW portfolio of solar, wind, and storage projects in the U.S. The success of such large-scale projects relies on a deep understanding of the basics of solar panel manufacturing and is reflective of numerous TotalEnergies solar partnerships driving its global expansion.

Beyond its corporate impact, the Montpelier solar project is set to deliver significant economic advantages to the local Ohio community, including job creation and economic development, while bolstering grid stability. This collaboration between TotalEnergies, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and has delivered projects like a solar project for Ceres, and Google sets a powerful precedent for accelerating the clean energy transition.
