A significant new renewable energy asset is now operational in North Alabama with the commissioning of a 30-megawatt solar farm. This milestone is the culmination of a collaborative partnership between Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Toyota Tsusho America, Inc. (TAI), and Huntsville Utilities, representing a $49 million investment into the region’s clean energy infrastructure.
Located in the North Huntsville Industrial Park, the expansive 168-acre facility is equipped with 72,000 solar panels. The project is engineered to generate approximately 62,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, which will supply around 70% of the Toyota Alabama plant’s total power needs. This initiative is a critical step in Toyota’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality at all its North American facilities by 2035, and it is expected to displace roughly 22,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.
“Toyota is committed to clean and sustainable power,” said Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama. “We know that the collective future for our community and our team members depends on clean mobility, clean air, clean water and biodiversity. We are thankful for our partners on this project who have created a model of environmental stewardship in North Alabama.”
The financial and operational backbone of the solar farm is a joint power purchase agreement (PPA) between TAI and Huntsville Utilities. This PPA stands as the largest flexibility agreement of its type, enabling the municipal utility to procure clean energy cost-effectively. TAI’s Energy Infrastructure Solutions team managed the project’s development, which began in June 2023. As the owner of the array, TAI will also oversee its long-term operations.
Local officials praised the project as a forward-thinking model for public-private cooperation. “Clean solar energy is vital for powering the City of Huntsville as we continue to see a steady rise in energy demand,” commented Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. Wes Kelley, president and CEO of Huntsville Utilities, added, “Innovative approaches to clean energy generation are critical to Huntsville’s future growth. Toyota’s forward-thinking approach to carbon neutrality has paved the way for additional public-private collaborations.”
Chris Simmons, TAI’s division head for green infrastructure, noted the project’s alignment with the company’s global sustainability goals. “Bringing projects like this to life aligns with TAI’s goal to create positive impacts in local communities, while also helping to create pathways to a sustainable future globally,” he stated.
