Trinidad and Tobago NGO Installs Solar System with Grant Funding
In a significant step towards sustainability and operational resilience, SEWA International, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Trinidad and Tobago, has successfully installed a solar-powered system at its multi-purpose facility in Piarco. This forward-thinking initiative was made possible through crucial funding from the Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) Grant Programme, showcasing a powerful model of corporate-community partnership.
Powering Community Impact with a Trinidad solar NGO
The new solar system is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it is a critical enabler for SEWA International’s diverse community-focused activities. By providing a reliable and cost-effective source of energy, the installation ensures that the Piarco facility can consistently support essential programs. These include vital community emergency response training, wellness sessions like yoga for anxiety, and life-saving blood donation drives.
With a stable power supply, SEWA can reduce its operational costs and enhance its capacity to serve the community, especially during times of frequent use or potential power disruptions. This move not only aligns with environmental goals but also strengthens the organization’s ability to deliver its mission without interruption.
The EPIC Grant: A Catalyst for Change
This impactful project was funded by the Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities (EPIC) Grant Programme, a collaborative initiative between the Digicel Foundation and Shell Trinidad and Tobago. Through this program, five NGOs received a total of $500,000 to execute sustainable community projects. Alongside SEWA International, the Scouts Association of Trinidad and Tobago was another notable beneficiary of this funding cycle.
The partnership represents a significant commitment to grassroots development. The Digicel Foundation matched Shell’s pledge, resulting in a combined investment of 3.8 million TTD dedicated to fostering sustainable community development across the nation.
Future Opportunities for NGOs
The success of SEWA International’s project highlights a valuable opportunity for other non-profits. The EPIC Grant Programme is continuing its mission, with applications now open for the 2026/2027 cycle. The program plans to select ten new NGOs, each of which will receive a $100,000 grant to implement their own extraordinary community projects.
SEWA International’s solar installation stands as a powerful testament to how strategic grant funding can empower NGOs to build a more sustainable and resilient future, benefiting both their operations and the communities they serve.
