Ukraine solar storage: Impressive 6.9 MWh Project Approved

The National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission of Ukraine (NEURC) has approved the connection of a 3.8 MW solar plant, integrated with a 6.9 MWh energy storage system, to the national grid. This approval is more than just a procedural step; it marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s strategic efforts to expand its renewable energy production, enhance grid stability, and drive national decarbonization. Energysave’s Ukraine solar storage Plant and Project

The project, developed by Energysave, features a 3.8 MW solar power plant coupled with a 6.9 MWh energy storage system. According to PV Magazine, the Ukrainian company has already connected the solar power plant to the grid under the feed-in tariff (FIT) system. This system provides renewable energy producers with a stable revenue stream by guaranteeing a fixed payment for the electricity they generate.

This initiative is a key component of a broader program supported by the Ukrainian Decarbonisation Fund, which approved nine regional energy projects to bolster the nation’s energy resilience. The Energysave project alone is expected to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions by approximately 1,437 tons annually.

The energy storage system, set to be connected by the end of 2024, will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid. In June, the state-owned company Ukrhydroenergo announced plans to build a massive 200 MW / 800 MWh energy storage system at the Kaniv hydroelectric power plant, funded by a $177 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The EBRD’s involvement underscores the international confidence in Ukraine’s renewable sector, as it has also partnered with other developers to build up to 500 MWp of solar projects in the country. This growth extends to the residential sector as well, where the installed capacity of residential solar has surpassed 1.5 GW, indicating a widespread adoption of decentralized energy solutions.

Energysave itself is expanding its portfolio, with plans to build a 20 MW / 22 MWh battery storage system in the Khmelnytskyi region, supported by a 2.5 million Euro loan from the European Union’s Investment Fund for Neighboring Countries (NIF).
