Zambia solar energy: Impressive Plan Launches in 2025

In a decisive move to secure its energy future, Zambia is launching a sweeping solar energy strategy in 2025, aimed at drastically reducing its dependence on hydropower and tapping into its vast solar potential. This national effort, part of the ambitious Mission 300 initiative, seeks to install 1,000 MW of solar capacity and diversify an electricity mix that was approximately 90% hydropower-based in 2023.

A Surge in Large-Scale Solar Development for Zambia solar energy: Impressive Plan Launches in 2025

The plan is already being put into action with a series of significant projects. In late 2025, construction commenced on the 100 MW Siavonga solar photovoltaic project, an $80 million investment by ZESCO’s JIGSCO Energy. Further expanding this momentum, an agreement was signed in January 2026 with Chinese firms LONGi Solar Technology and Sino Green Technology to develop up to 1 GW of solar power, beginning with a 100 MW pilot plant in the Itezhi-Tezhi District. These developments complement other major undertakings, such as the planned 100MW solar plant in Chipata. Meanwhile, the 50 MW facility in Mansa is set to add 14 MW to the national grid by early 2026, building upon the foundation of existing installations like the 16 MW plant powering the Copperbelt.

Decentralization and Universal Access

Beyond utility-scale plants, a core component of Zambia’s strategy is decentralization. The Presidential Constituency Energy Initiative (PCEI) aims to install a 2 MW solar plant in each of the nation’s 156 constituencies, generating over 300 MW of power at the local level. This model is designed to improve energy access, stimulate local economies, and create revenue streams for community development. This initiative is powerfully supported by international funding; in July 2025, the World Bank approved a $200 million grant for the ASCENT Zambia project. This funding is critical to the national goal of achieving universal electricity access and is a key step toward the vision for Zambia’s solar electrification of millions of homes, aiming to connect over one million people by 2030.

A Framework for Investment and Growth

The success of these ambitious plans rests on a robust framework of collaboration and investment. Events like the Solar & Storage Zambia 2025 conference are pivotal in promoting technology transfer and attracting the private capital needed to fuel this expansion. The government’s strategy creates a stable model for public-private partnerships, encouraging a dynamic market as seen in recent developments like the innovative franchise deals emerging in 2024. Securing sufficient financing for solar projects remains a priority, with the World Bank’s support serving as a significant catalyst. This industrial growth will also generate thousands of jobs and require a deeper understanding across the value chain, from installation to the fundamentals of solar panel manufacturing.

Zambia’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

By executing this comprehensive strategy, Zambia is not just addressing its immediate energy deficits but is also positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s renewable energy transition. The plan aligns with global climate objectives and the nation’s Vision 2030 to achieve middle-income status. The ultimate goal is to create a resilient energy system where non-hydropower renewables account for 33% of the total mix. If successful, Zambia’s model of combining large-scale projects with community-owned generation could become a blueprint for sustainable development across the continent.
