Installed Zambia Solar Capacity Milestone
Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has reached 242 MW of installed solar-generation capacity in Zambia, inching closer to its target of 500 MW by 2027. This milestone reflects the company’s commitment to expanding renewable energy resources in the region.
Zambia Solar Capacity Project Portfolio
CEC’s solar energy portfolio includes several significant plants:
- Riverside Solar Plant: 34 MW
- Itimpi I Solar Plant: 60 MW
- Fitula Solar Plant: 12 MW
- Itimpi II Solar Plant: 136 MW
Itimpi II is notable as Zambia’s largest solar plant, which CEC financed through its own green bond without requiring a sovereign guarantee.
Future Zambia Solar Capacity Developments
In addition to existing projects, CEC is actively developing the 25 MW Garneton Solar Project under Zambia’s GET FiT programme, aimed at further enhancing its energy generation capacity.
Zambia Solar Capacity Industry Context
Zambia’s push towards renewable energy aligns with broader regional trends in Africa where countries are increasingly investing in solar power to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
