100MW Solar Tower Goes Live in South Africa

A landmark project in South Africa’s transition to clean energy has officially come online. PowerChina announced that the 100 MW Redstone Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant, located in the Siyanda district of the Northern Cape province, has been activated and connected to the grid. This facility is poised to deliver approximately 480 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power around 200,000 South African homes.

Pioneering Molten Salt Technology for the 100MW Solar Tower Goes Live in South Africa

The Redstone project represents a significant technological leap for the region, as it is the first solar thermal tower in sub-Saharan Africa to utilize molten salt for energy storage. The plant operates using a vast array of 41,260 mirrors, known as heliostats, which track the sun and reflect its rays onto a central receiver atop a tower. This process heats molten salt to a temperature of 565 degrees Celsius.

This superheated salt acts as a thermal battery. Its most crucial feature is the ability to store thermal energy for up to 12 hours, allowing the plant to generate electricity at full capacity long after sunset. This capability provides a stable and dispatchable source of solar power, directly addressing the country’s need for reliable energy to combat load-shedding.

Economic Impact and Strategic Investment in the 100MW Solar Tower Goes Live in South Africa

With a total capital cost of around $724 million, the Redstone plant stands as the largest single investment in the Northern Cape. The project is majority-owned by Saudi Arabian firm ACWA Power, which holds a 49% stake. Its construction has been a major boon for the local economy, creating over 600 permanent local jobs and employing as many as 1,800 people during its peak construction phase.

A Key Component of South Africa’s Energy Future: 100MW Solar Tower Goes Live in South Africa

The electricity generated by the Redstone tower will be sold to the national utility, Eskom, under a 20-year power purchase agreement. This was secured through South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPP) program, a key government initiative designed to increase the share of renewable energy in the national grid. By providing consistent, clean power day and night, the Redstone project is a critical step forward in reducing the nation’s dependence on coal and advancing toward a more sustainable and secure energy future.
