The Maldives has advanced its national sustainability agenda with the successful installation and inauguration of 12 solar hybrid systems across the islands of Thaa Atoll. This milestone, part of the nation’s ambitious renewable energy strategy, is projected to displace 1.2 million liters of diesel fuel and eliminate 3,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, fundamentally transforming the energy landscape for these remote communities.
How the Maldives Installed 12 Solar Systems in Thaa Atoll Islands
During a formal ceremony on Thaa Atoll Kinbidhoo, Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim officially commenced energy generation from the new facilities. The project integrates 2.5 MW of solar PV capacity with 1.9 MWh of battery storage, ensuring a stable and continuous power supply. This initiative is a core component of the Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development (POISED project), a large-scale program financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aimed at replacing polluting diesel generators across the archipelago.
Technical Innovation and Strategic Implementation
The newly operational mini-grids are advanced solar PV hybrid systems designed to provide reliable electricity day and night, a critical upgrade for island environments often susceptible to power disruptions. Fenaka Corporation played a pivotal role in the implementation, equipping local homes and infrastructure. The overarching goal of the POISED project is to bring clean energy to 160 islands. To date, the program has successfully deployed 13.4 MW of solar PV and 9.8 MWh of battery storage across 72 villages, marking significant progress since its inception.
National Vision and Future Investments
These installations represent a significant step toward the Maldivian government’s target of generating one-third of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources within the next five years. Building on the success of POISED, the government and the ADB are promoting the Accelerating Sustainable System Development Using Renewable Energy (ASSURE) program. This follow-up initiative is designed to scale up green mini-grids by attracting private sector investment and further solidifying the country’s energy security and economic resilience.
The successful deployment in Thaa Atoll serves as a powerful example of the Maldives’ commitment to leading the global transition to sustainable energy. By reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and championing clean technology, the nation is not only enhancing its environmental credentials but also ensuring a more financially sustainable future for its citizens.
