Maldives Solar Initiative Launched
The Maldives has introduced a solar panel initiative aimed at combating climate change, highlighted by the opening of the world’s first fully solar-powered resort on Gasfinolhu Island. This resort, operated by Club Med, is designed to run entirely on solar power, eliminating the reliance on diesel generators.
Maldives Solar Initiative Resort Specifications
The solar panels at the resort are capable of producing up to 1,100 kilowatts at peak power, significantly surpassing the resort’s maximum load requirement of 600 kilowatts. Surplus energy generated during the day is stored in a large-scale battery system, which enables the resort to maintain power overnight. In cases of consecutive rainy days, three diesel generators serve as backup.
Maldives Solar Initiative Environmental Goals
This initiative aligns with the Maldives’ long-standing objective of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral country, a goal set in 2009 and initially targeted for achievement by 2020. The resort’s solar energy system is expected to recover its environmental system costs within six to seven years.

Other resorts in the Maldives are also adopting similar measures; for instance, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa features a solar power system with over 2,000 panels and a capacity of 569 kWp. Such investments support the growing trend towards more eco-friendly luxury travel in the region.
Future Plans for the Maldives Solar Initiative
The Maldives aims to expand its renewable energy initiatives, including the establishment of a zero waste management system on the island. The ongoing commitment to sustainable energy infrastructure continues to demonstrate the country’s leadership in fostering green tourism.
