Alight, a leader in solar power and renewable energy storage, has announced plans to develop a 90 MWp solar project in Varkaus. This project represents a major step for Alight in Finland, significantly increasing its solar capacity in the country on top of its existing 100 MWp currently under development.
New 90 MWp Varkaus Solar Project Details
The new project is a collaboration between Alight and Savon Voima, a major energy company in Finland, marking a significant expansion of Alight’s solar power capacity in the country.
With construction slated to begin in 2025, the Varkaus project is expected to be completed by 2026. Once operational, the solar park will generate approximately 90 GWh annually—enough to power around 30,000 households.
This impressive output will also help reduce Finland’s carbon emissions by about 15,000 tonnes each year, supporting the nation’s climate goals.
Yingli Green Energy has been selected as the preferred supplier for the project, providing its YGE-U21-M 545W high-efficiency modules and partnering with ReneSola, which will supply its Virtus 285W modules.
Partnership with Local Landowners
To secure land for the solar project, Alight has partnered with local landowners in Varkaus. This collaboration helps ensure the project is well-integrated within the community and benefits the local economy. The project will also create jobs during its construction phase and provide long-term economic benefits through lease agreements with landowners.
Boosting Finland’s Renewable Energy Goals
Finland aims to become carbon-neutral by 2035, and projects like the Varkaus solar park are crucial to achieving this goal. The Finnish government has set ambitious targets for increasing renewable energy capacity, with a focus on wind and solar power. Alight’s project will contribute significantly to these targets by adding 90 MWp of clean energy to the grid.
The Varkaus project is part of a larger trend of growth for solar in Finland, which is becoming an increasingly important part of the energy mix. The country has seen rapid growth in solar installations in recent years, driven by falling costs and growing demand for clean energy. Alight’s CEO, Harald Överholm, highlighted the importance of the project in a recent statement. “This new development in Varkaus is a testament to Alight’s commitment to expanding renewable energy in Finland,” he said. “We are proud to be working with Savon Voima and local landowners to bring this project to life.”
“It is a significant step forward in our mission to provide clean, reliable energy to communities across Finland,” Överholm added.
Alight’s Continued European Expansion
The Varkaus project is part of Alight’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio across Europe. The company currently has over 1,000 MWp of solar projects under development, with a focus on the Nordic countries. In addition to Finland, Alight has projects in Sweden and Norway, where it is also a leading provider of solar power solutions.
Alight’s success in Finland is driven in part by its innovative approach to solar energy development. The company uses advanced technologies and data-driven insights to optimize the design and performance of its solar parks. This approach allows Alight to deliver high-quality projects that meet the needs of its customers and the communities they serve.
As the Varkaus project moves forward, Alight will continue to work closely with its partners to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget. The company is committed to maintaining high standards of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the construction process.
