SATO solar housing Expands with 35 Amazing Solar Installations

SATO expands solar energy initiatives for rental housing in Finland

SATO, a leading rental housing provider in Finland, is significantly expanding its solar energy initiatives. The company is installing solar power systems at 35 properties across the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Turku, with the goal of reaching 50 solar-powered properties by the end of the year.

Solar energy for nearly 2,000 homes

SATO has installed solar power systems at 35 properties, bringing clean energy to nearly 2,000 homes. These systems will generate approximately 1,000 MWh of solar electricity annually, which is equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of around 500 one-bedroom apartments.

The solar energy generated will primarily power common areas in each building, including heating systems, ventilation, and general lighting. Any surplus electricity will be fed into the national grid.

Strengthening the commitment to carbon neutrality

This expansion builds on SATO’s existing environmental sustainability initiatives, including previous solar panel installations on 15 properties in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Turku. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality in energy consumption for its rental buildings and offices by 2030.

“The benefits of solar power include emission-free energy generation and a reduction in a property’s carbon footprint. Solar power also improves the security of supply and contributes to the national electricity system. For example, in the summer, the amount of solar electricity fed into the national grid is at its highest when electricity demand is at its peak due to increased use of air conditioning. This reduces the need to use more polluting forms of electricity production such as coal and peat,” said Jani Nieminen, President and CEO of SATO.

Integrating electric vehicle charging

Alongside its solar power expansion, SATO is also increasing the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its properties. The company plans to install EV charging stations at 15 properties this year, followed by another 15 next year.

“Both solar power and electric vehicle charging are important parts of our sustainability work. The charging stations will be connected to the properties’ solar power systems, which will help reduce the carbon footprint of the electric vehicles charged at SATO properties and support Finland’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035. We want to make it easy for our residents to make sustainable choices,” Nieminen said.

SATO’s expansion of solar power and EV charging stations underscores its commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality. By aiming for 50 solar-powered properties by the end of the year and continuing to expand these initiatives, the company is actively contributing to a more sustainable future.
