Impressive low-carbon solar roofing unveiled by ArcelorMittal

A New Era in Sustainable Construction: Helioroof by ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal Construction has officially launched Helioroof, a groundbreaking, all-in-one insulated steel roofing system that integrates solar cells directly into its structure. Produced at the company’s facility in Contrisson, France, this innovative product marks a significant advancement in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), merging the functions of a structural roof, thermal insulation, and a power generation plant into a single, cohesive unit.

The system is engineered for superior sustainability, built upon ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® steel, which is sourced from recycled and renewably produced materials. This construction results in a product with a 25% lower carbon footprint than a traditional insulated steel roof fitted with separate solar panels. Furthermore, Helioroof weighs 50% less than conventional rooftop solar arrays, reducing the structural load on buildings and offering architects greater design freedom. The unique design consists of a sandwich panel with two steel sheets, a thermal insulation layer, and a top layer with the solar cells fully integrated.

Unmatched Performance and Design Efficiency

Helioroof sets a new benchmark for performance in the BIPV market. The custom-made modules can be produced in lengths of up to 12 meters, delivering a world-record power output of 2.1 kWp per module. This integrated approach simplifies installation by eliminating the need for separate mounting racks and brackets, a key step in the overall solar module lifecycle. The use of robust steel from specialized photovoltaic materials also ensures enhanced safety and long-term durability.

The product, which is protected by 15 patents after five years of development, has already been implemented in several initial projects, including an urban brewery in Belgium and industrial halls in France. This demonstrates its versatility for both commercial and residential applications.

Strategic European Production and Market Expansion

Manufacturing Helioroof in France provides a distinct advantage, aligning with European policies aimed at fostering domestic, low-carbon supply chains. This is particularly relevant for initiatives like France’s CRE tender, which incentivizes locally produced solar modules. The launch is timed perfectly to capitalize on the country’s renewable energy boom, as indicated by the latest updates on the French solar market.

Following its initial availability in France, ArcelorMittal plans a strategic expansion into other key European markets, including Germany. This move positions Helioroof as a pivotal tool for decarbonizing the continent’s construction sector. For those looking to understand the industry, grasping the fundamentals of solar panel production and the associated manufacturing plant costs is essential to appreciating the scale of such innovations. To explore the topic further, a complimentary e-course on building solar modules is available.
