Oman solar plant: Impressive 105 MW Project Starts in 2025

Oman is advancing its renewable energy ambitions with a significant 105 MW solar power project located in Saih Nahaydah, North Oman. This initiative is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio under the Vision 2040 framework. While major construction is slated for 2025, early site work, including the installation of piles for solar trackers, is already underway, setting the stage for the plant to achieve commercial operation by the second quarter of 2026.

The project is being developed through a strategic joint venture between OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), holding a 51% stake, and TotalEnergies Renewables, with a 49% share. It forms a key component of the broader “Rawafid” renewable energy program designed to supply clean power to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). Once operational, the plant will provide electricity directly to PDO’s operations, marking a significant step in decarbonizing the country’s legacy energy sector.

With official approval from Oman’s Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), the project aligns with national regulatory standards. The development leverages advanced solar photovoltaic technology, where the success of the entire facility relies on everything from high-quality solar panel components to a precise photovoltaic manufacturing process. This plant, alongside a planned 98 MW facility in South Oman, will contribute over 200 MW of solar capacity to the grid, supporting Oman’s goal of generating 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

The economic and environmental dividends of the Saih Nahaydah plant are substantial. The investment injects significant capital into the region, a factor illuminated when considering the typical cost structure of a solar panel factory, and is expected to create numerous local jobs during its construction phase. Environmentally, the 105 MW of clean energy will displace considerable greenhouse gas emissions annually, enhancing Oman’s energy security with a locally sourced, sustainable power supply.

As a blueprint for future clean energy integration in industrial operations, this project signals Oman’s firm commitment to a sustainable transition. It showcases the viability of large-scale renewable projects and is poised to attract further investment into the nation’s green energy sector. For industry professionals and enthusiasts, understanding the fundamentals of PV technology is more relevant than ever, with many resources like this renewable energy e-course available to deepen that knowledge.
