STELCO and Huawei Launch the Maldives solar project
The Republic of Maldives, a nation on the front lines of climate change, has taken a significant leap forward in its renewable energy journey. In a landmark collaboration, the State Electric Company (STELCO) and global technology leader Huawei have officially commissioned a groundbreaking 10-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Hulhumalé. This project stands as one of the largest solar installations in the country, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
A Milestone for a Sustainable Future with the Maldives solar project
Located in Hulhumalé Phase II, Kaafu Atoll, the 10MW solar farm is a cornerstone of the Maldives’ strategy to reduce its heavy reliance on imported diesel fuel, which has historically generated over 90% of its electricity. The project, developed by STELCO with technological solutions from Huawei Digital Power, was brought to life with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Maldivian government.
The plant’s impact is substantial. It is projected to generate approximately 15.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This output is sufficient to power around 6,000 households, displacing the need for an estimated 3 million liters of diesel each year. Consequently, the project is expected to offset nearly 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, directly contributing to the Maldives’ Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2030.
Advanced Technology for a Unique Environment: The Maldives solar project
Integrating a large-scale solar facility into an isolated island grid presents unique technical challenges. Huawei’s state-of-the-art Smart PV Solution was selected to address these complexities, ensuring both optimized energy production and unwavering grid stability.
The system utilizes advanced SUN2000 inverters and a Smart String Energy Storage System (Smart SES) managed by the FusionSolar platform. This integrated solution employs cutting-edge features like grid-forming technology, which allows the plant to stabilize the island grid and enables up to 100% renewable energy penetration during peak solar production hours. Furthermore, post-launch data has shown the system’s performance ratio exceeding 85%, a remarkable achievement in tropical conditions, with AI-powered optimization reportedly increasing energy yield by 22%.
The Bigger Picture: Impact and Expansion of the Maldives solar project
Beyond the immediate environmental and economic benefits, the STELCO-Huawei project serves as a powerful symbol of progress. It aligns perfectly with the Maldives’ Strategic Action Plan and its long-term net-zero ambitions, demonstrating a viable path for other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to achieve energy independence and climate resilience.
The journey doesn’t end here. This 10MW installation represents just the first phase of a larger vision. A second phase is already planned, which will add another 10MW of solar capacity, crucially supplemented with battery storage to ensure a consistent power supply even when the sun isn’t shining. This expansion, targeting commercial operation by 2025, will further solidify the Maldives’ position as a regional leader in renewable energy adoption.
