A Lifeline for Rural Communities
In a significant move to address Cuba’s persistent energy crisis, China has donated 5,000 individual solar photovoltaic systems designated for rural households. This timely aid provides a critical boost to communities in isolated areas, many of whom have been struggling with unreliable power from fuel-short generators. The off-grid systems are set to deliver energy independence directly to families, marking a key step in a deepening renewable energy partnership between the two nations.
Transforming Daily Life with Clean Energy
The impact of these 2 kW systems is expected to be immediate and profound. For recipients, the donation means the ability to power essential appliances like refrigerators for food and medicine, fans for relief from the heat, and televisions. Elena Maidelín Ortiz Fernández, a project head for Cuba’s national electric utility (UNE), highlighted the transformative effect of this initiative. “If you install a 2 kW system for these people there… their lives change completely,” she noted, adding that such improvements in living standards “contribute to preventing these people from migrating.”
Part of a Larger Strategic Partnership
This donation is a component of a much broader collaboration aimed at advancing Cuba’s green energy transition. The 5,000 units are part of a total of 10,000 donated PV systems from China, with other units being allocated to essential services like health clinics. Furthermore, the partnership includes the provision of 120 MW of solar panels to expand Cuba’s larger solar parks. This support is crucial for Cuba’s national goal of operating 92 solar parks by 2028, a significant increase from the 34 parks currently in operation. The economic ties are also strengthening, with Chinese solar exports to Cuba skyrocketing from $5 million in 2023 to $117 million in 2025, supplemented by an $80 million emergency aid package for electrical equipment approved by President Xi Jinping.
